CONVERSATIONS WITH SRI SRI THAKUR: PRATUL-DIPTI (BY SRI MANILAL CHAKRABORTY): FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 1961: PART 3: GOPA AND GOBARDHAN; THE FEWER THE DEFECTS DUE TO ADHERENCE TO THE LORD, THE BETTER THE IMPARTATION OF DHARMA; MIRACLES; LATTU MAHARAJ
Hemda, “What is the meaning of ‘Gopa’?”

Sri Sri Thakur, “In Sanskrit ‘go’ means ‘Brahmin’, ‘the Vedas’, ‘earth’, ‘cow’ etc. He who nurtures, protects and fulfils these is Gopa. And he who maintains the world is Gobardhan (Lord).”

Hemda, “God comes in the form of a man. But after the demise of this manifestation again the level of Dharma is lowered and there is chaos. Is this chaos normal?”

Sri Sri Thakur, “A human being comes and dies. Again a human being comes and dies. Among human beings if there is no imparter then there is chaos. Suppose, if you impart Dharma then it will remain. Otherwise it will die out. One imparts Dharma to another and in this way the movement goes on.

Harinandanda, “We are not able to impart Dharma fully.”

Sri Sri Thakur, “You will impart Dharma according to your ability. You will try to impart it among your sons. You are the authority. Suppose, you impart eight annas to a man. And this man will impart to someone else four annas and so on. Therefore, the more you will do, being free from defects, the better that imparting will be. So I speak of adherence to the Lord. The more the adherence, the more the compass of the brain remains fixed. Then that compass directs the movements, conditions etc. of that person.”

Satyada (Dey), “Thakur, what shall we understand by miracles?”

Sri Sri Thakur, “Do you see magic? You don’t know the cause of it. Suddenly you see something. You become astonished. Your intelligence becomes dull. You don’t  find any reason. This is a miracle.

I have been fearful of these things since my boyhood. I thought that I would be a miracle-monger. I would want the effect without knowing the cause. Inquisitiveness is lost by this. We won’t know the real cause and effect for these happenings. Again, the intellect of a person is just like the needle of the compass. He determines good or bad by that intellect. That which maintains the go of life of a person is his existential go. This existential go, which I call ‘the urge of existence’, if I don’t maintain it, then it will be understood that my existential go is decaying.

There was one disciple of Ramakrishnadeb. His name was Lattu Maharaj. Lattu Maharaj was absolutely simple-minded. Ramakrishnadeb asked him to learn the alphabet. As it was not possible for him to learn it Ramakrishnadeb told him to carry the implements of hookah and napkin. Lattu Maharaj became so delighted that he shouted, ‘You have saved me, you have saved me!’ That Lattu Maharaj attained divine knowledge. The features of Lattu Maharaj resemble those of Ramakrishnadeb. It is very difficult to find such a man like Lattu Maharaj. It is rare to find such adherence and clear conception.

The house was full of people. Everyone’s gaze was fixed on Sri Sri Thakur. Spencerda*, standing in the rear of the people, faced Sri Sri Thakur. He had just come from Almora. Sri Sri Thakur was delighted to see him and cried out, “Who is he?”

Spencerda burst out laughing. Sri Sri Thakur (stretching his two arms), “Shall I kiss you?”

Spencerda, still laughing, came towards Sri Sri Thakur.

Sri Sri Thakur gave Spencerda a kiss on each cheek and asked, “Are you well?”

Spencerda, “Yes, I am well, but a little tired from traveling for two days.”

Sri Sri Thakur, “Make your body fit. (Looking at a brother) Take him to the house of Hauserman. Arrange for good food, rest and care.”

It was getting late. Sri Sri Thakur got up. The devotees went to their own places. (End of conversation)

*Spencerda refers to Edmund J. Spencer, first American disciple of Sri Sri Thakur
