When Hauserman met Sri Sri Thakur Anukulchandra at Pabna for the first time with
a group of foreigners,Sri Sri Thakur was then 58 years old (1945-46)and a very
charming Bengali Brahmin.
As described by Hauserman, He was seating on a wooden bedstead behind a small
low brick house in a typical simple white Bengali dress— a dhoti and collarless
half sleeved shirt and was in a relaxing mood. He was smoking pipe at his
hand(the hookah). His smile was, as open and guileless as a child, made Ray to
feel almost immediately that he knew him from a long time, at his very first
meeting. Ray, Ed and other members of the group took their seats. After informal
introductions by Ed. J. Spencer, Ray questioned Thakur—
"Do you believe in Christ?"
"Yes! I believe in Christ. He is the Emperor—Beggar of Love. He begged
for it from everyone, the rich, the poor, the fishermen, tax collectors and even
from Mary Magdalene. ---
--- If Christ were alive, I would be the first person to take initiation from
Him." —Thakur replied.
Ray could not just belief his ears, he was amazed beyond his
imaginations, that to hearing it from a Hindu Bengali Brahmin with the
holy-thread in his body, which was quite visible. On the contrary he was
expecting to see miracles and to learn about some teaching of Yoga — the Indian
philosophy from the saint.
But instead Thakur was pushing Jesus. This was totally unexpected and
surprised him. Ray's immediate inner reaction was bewilderment: "Was I wasting
my time here? Could not I find this kind of advice back in America? Should I
leave for my home-town?"
But subsequently he realized; such advice as that of Thakur is rare to
find even in America. Thakur was practically preaching unadulterated,
non-commercial, non-hegemonistic, non-supremacist Christian love. And he also
found the Ashram, that was really a model of `Universal brotherhood'.
