CONVERSATIONS
WITH SRI SRI THAKUR: PRATUL-DIPTI (BY SRI MANILAL CHAKRABORTY):
WEDNESDAY, JULY 26, 196: FROM THIEF TO SAINT; MATCHMAKERS; ABSORBING
CAPACITY OF BODY; EXISTENTIALISM AND DHARMA
In the morning Sri Sri Thakur was sitting in the courtyard. Rev. Ashokeda (grandson of Sri Sri Thakur) came.
Sri Sri Thakur (smiling), “What is the news, Dadu?”
Ashokeda laughed. He asked Thakur, “Well, Dadu (grandfather), suppose, a man was a thief before and now he has become a saint. How does this happen?”
Sri Sri Thakur, “A human being possesses that inner hankering. After being shocked the inner hankering of a person rises. In the story of Les Miserables the life of the thief was completely changed by a single word of the Bishop. Likewise in my childhood I saw a thief’s life was changed on my instructions.”
Ashokeda, “It is very difficult to understand who will be compatible with whom for marriage.”
Sri Sri Thakur, “I have heard from my father that there were matchmakers in our country. They were so expert that they could predict beforehand if a certain girl married a certain boy, when she would give birth to a boy, then another boy, then a daughter, and what the character of the daughter would be etc. etc....”
During the conversation the wife of a local professor came and bowed down to Sri Sri Thakur. She had some tinsel instead of ‘sindur’ (finger painted dot) on her forehead.
Sri Sri Thakur, “Mother, don’t you put ‘sindur’ on your forehead? It is better to use ‘sindur’.
Then He said,
“Iron bracelets strengthen
blood corpuscles.
Bracelets of shell nurture the bone.
Sindur (mark of red powder)
enhances beauty.
This cures a barren woman.”
Ashokeda, “How will the blood corpuscles be strengthened by wearing iron?”
Sri Sri Thakur, “Every part of the body has an absorbing capacity. So if a substance comes into contact with the body, the body will absorb what is needed for it. The generative function belongs to the females. So iron is needed for them.”
Ashokeda, “Women also need this as they have anemia.”
Sri Sri Thakur (nodding), “Yes.”
As Thakur smoked His pipe a conversation about ‘isms’ began.
Sri Sri Thakur, “Of all the ‘isms’ that exist the ‘ism’ of existence is the greatest. If we are to keep our existence in tact, then nothing must be neglected, not even trees, grass, insects or animals. That ‘ism’ is good which nurtures my existence, and environment. That ‘ism’ enhances, increases and enriches us ll. Some say that the environment is nothing. I don’t understand this. The ‘ism’ that makes our existence beautiful, that prepares us for eternal life is good. Dharma is that which upholds the existence of soul and environment. This is the primary meaning of existentialism.”
A lot of time had passed. It was now time for Thakur to have His bath. One by one His devotees left.
