n, U. S. A., was posted in Burma (Myanmar). He was looking after the
Ambulance division, of American Field Service, assigned to the 14th British
Indian Army. He was twice mentioned in dispatches for bravery in action.

After the war was over, Ray was ready to return to USA. He was waiting at
Calcutta (presently Kolkata) for passage home. Ray was recapitulating the war
experience in horror-- the hell of war firsthand.

His memory of fierce fighting fought by the Japanese Army, who wanted to blow
him and his fellow soldiers to smithereens, was haunting him day and night.
Sights of bombs exploding, deafening sounds, casualties of war, the anguish of
patients puzzled him. So he became interested in Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of
non-violence.

However events turned dramatically, shortly before Ray was due to sail, he
met an A.F.S. colleague, a brilliant philosopher from Harvard, Ed J. Spencer,
who had just returned from Himaitpur, a little known village, in the district of
Pabna, East Bengal (Bangladesh). There he met Sri Anukul Chandra Chakraborty, a
spiritual Saint, called by his devotees "Sri Sri Thakur"— which meant Very
Reverend Spiritual Teacher.

After meeting Sri Sri Thakur at Himaitpur, Ed. J. Spencer had a wonderful
spiritual experience. He had an appreciable change in his personality, which was
apparent in his face. He was glowing with life. He was greatly exited. Ed.
Spencer discussed with Ray about his recent visit to Sri Sri Thakur and his
spiritual organization called Satsang Ashram at Himaitpur. He proposed Ray to
make a trip to Himaitpur before leaving for U. S. A.

Ray was in a hurry to go back to America. Because of the war, Ray was held
up and could not go back to his home for last 2 years. During this period he
lost his father at his home due to an infection of typhus. However Ed insisted—

"Ray, you must meet this `Holy-man' before you go back to America!"

"But there is no time", Ray protested. "If I can't go by this ship, I may then
be stuck up for months."

Ed warned. "If you miss this opportunity, you may miss a lifetime's experience "

Ray understood the seriousness of the warning, as he always respected Ed's
advice, for his intelligence, insight and integrity. He decided to cancel the
journey for the time being.

Ultimately, Ray A. Hauserman cancelled the steamship passage and on a
descent early morning, in the company of others and Ed J. Spencer started their
arduous journey to Himaitpur, a distance of 140 miles north of Calcutta
(Kolkata).

And destiny was different, with the exception of two trips back to USA in
1948 and 1959, Ray Archer Hauserman stayed back with Sri Sri Thakur
Anukulchandra at Himaitpur and later at Satsang Ashram, Deoghar, India for more
than 20 years. He became a permanent member of the community.
